Support Your Local Magic Shop
Tophat100x100
Given the time, we can all find real bargains at online retail magic sites. Keep in mind, though, that every dollar you spend online robs business away from your local Brick & Mortar shop owner. He's there to support you, answer your questions, demonstrate the newest products and make life easier for you.

If you find an item you like online, make a point to ask your local shop owner whether he can get it for you. If it costs a dollar or two more at the local shop, consider it the cost of keeping a valuable magic resource alive in your community.

A Brief Look at the History of I.B.M. Ring #199

IBM Logo
The International Brotherhood of Magicians charters more than 300 individual worldwide chapters called Rings. Our sponsoring chapter, Raleigh-Durham Ring #199, was officially chartered by the I.B.M. through the efforts of Dr. William Spooner on May 1, 1970. Dr. Spooner went on to serve as the I.B.M. International President from 1985-86.

The Ring was created around the independent Capital City Magic Club established in 1960. This club hosted and supported a very active group of professional and amateur magicians from the Raleigh, North Carolina area. In 1969, the club members decided to join the  International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Ring #199 was originally named for Wallace Lee, a famous "Tar Heel" magician and an active club member who passed on May 13, 1969.  For nearly twenty years Ring #199 met in the basement of the home of well-known magician Dick Snavely.  In honor of his faultless support, the Ring's title was amended to include Dick's name following his passing on August 4, 1997.

Ring #199 continues to nurture local, national and international magicians and leaders within the magical arts. Aside from Dr. Spooner, Ring #199 is home to two more I.B.M. International Presidents: Michael Gorman (1991-92) and Phil Willmarth (2007-08). Phil also served as the Executive Editor for the I.B.M. Journal, The Linking Ring, from 1991 to 2007. The Ring is also home to Tom Beamon, I.B.M. Territorial Vice President.

Now you know the history of Ring #199.
The future is yours to write.

Seven Effective Habits of Successful Magicians

MYI Gold Logo

Successful magicians around the world share seven powerful habits. How many do you share?

1) Successful magicians never reveal the secret! Magic consists of illusions presented in a manner that replicates mystical feats. When the secret is revealed, whether intentionally or accidentally, the illusion ceases to amaze. Protect the secret. Remember and honor the Magician's Oath.

2) Successful magicians practice, practice, practice!  Knowing how an effect is done and presenting that effect in a convincing and entertaining manner are two totally different things. As magicians, we must practice our effects until we can present them in a manner which protects the secret and thoroughly entertains the viewer.

3) Successful magicians respect their props and equipment! Your magic props, books, videos and equipment are very important to you. These are the tools of your trade. Care for your tools as the valuable possessions they are. While you're at it, respect and care for the tools used by your peers. Never handle a prop, notebook or piece of equipment without the concent of its owner.

4) Successful magicians never copy others! Watch the top magic names. Study those performers who are most highly regarded in your local area. The one thing they all have in common is their uniqueness. They stand out because they are different from common off-the-shelf copycat performers. Add a bit of yourself to every routine, every prop and every thing you do. Be the magician that others want to copy!

5) Successful magicians seek advice from those who have journeyed where they would like to go! The superstars of magic learned their craft from the minds of the masters who came before. Ask for help from those who have already developed their skills, produced shows and established a presence in the world of magic. Reach out to the masters who currently have stood on the spot or traveled the path that you would one day like to reach.

6) Successful magicians respect the creative rights of their peers! Magic relies on the fertile minds of creative people to advance. Without these brilliant minds and their willingness to share, new ideas and effects would slowly cease to flow. Stealing another magician's routine or idea crushes this desire to create and share. Selling or buying cheaper knock-off versions of another magician's work discourages the creative process. Treat your peers as you would like to be treated.

7) Most importantly, successful magicians shut up and listen. All too often, we're so busy talking about our own successes, exploits and plans that we miss valuable tips and warnings from knowledgeable pro's around us. To get ahead, close your mouth and engage your brain!
